Using the iPad for presentations

August 6th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Apple Keynote, iPad, PowerPoint

Having recently bought an iPad I am excited about the prospect of using it to give my talks. I haven’t used it yet and am anxious about how the whole thing works. Is it as good as using a laptop? My 17″ MacBook Pro is heavy, so being able to project my slides using a [...]

Keynote Pro templates

December 13th, 2009 · No Comments · Apple Keynote, Designer worth noting

I normally stay away from templates for PowerPoint and Keynote but Keynote Pro has some gorgeous pre-made templates if you need inspiration for an important presentation. I have bought a few of these and particularly like the “OM 08” template for Apple Keynote. You can use the blue or green version, but both are very [...]

Using iPhone 3GS as presentation remote

November 12th, 2009 · No Comments · Apple Keynote, iPhone presenter apps

I gave a couple of talks today and decided to try the app Pointer instead of my usual remote. I was using my MacBook Pro with my presentation in Keynote. However this app does not work only with Keynote – it is a great remote for PowerPoint, too.

Keynote is better than PowerPoint:
Any thoughts/contributions?

September 21st, 2009 · 2 Comments · Apple Keynote, Bad PowerPoint, Great design

Lots of people reading about saving PPT as JPEGs, how to end a PPT talk but no comments yet! Come on, I am sure someone must have something to contribute! PowerPoint is bad/good – Keynote is much better (it really is). Or let me know if there’s anything you want me to cover here – [...]

Technical presentations can be boring
- too true!

June 30th, 2009 · No Comments · Bad PowerPoint, Communication

The one thing that always bothers me about medical, technical and scientific presentations is that they tend to be a bit boring. They are generally data-heavy with loads of graphs and charts, and they [...]

Using PowerPoint & Keynote
together for stunning presentations

June 12th, 2009 · No Comments · Apple Keynote, Great design, PowerPoint

Jason Valalik has produced a very useful video showing how you can have the best of both worlds i.e. Microsoft PowerPoint and Apple Keynote. His video is shown here: http://www.jasonvalalik.com/component/option,com_jd-wp/Itemid,29/p,623/ Why would you want to use both? Because there are things PowerPoint does well that are not available in Keynote and vice versa.

Printing great handouts from Apple Keynote
- it can be done

June 12th, 2009 · No Comments · Apple Keynote, Handouts, PowerPoint

I found it frustrating initially using Keynote because handout printing options appeared to be very limited (compared to PowerPoint, for example). But it’s actually very straightforward.

More on JPEG saving in PowerPoint

June 11th, 2009 · No Comments · Apple Keynote, Fonts, PowerPoint

OK, I tried something new. I created a simple slide in PowerPoint with big text then saved as JPEG – 72 dpi and 600 dpi (does the 600 dpi option really work??). I have to say they looked the same. Then I opened the slide in Apple Keynote and exported as a high quality TIFF [...]
