More on JPEG saving in PowerPoint

June 11th, 2009 · No Comments · Apple Keynote, Fonts, PowerPoint

OK, I tried something new.

I created a simple slide in PowerPoint with big text then saved as JPEG – 72 dpi and 600 dpi (does the 600 dpi option really work??). I have to say they looked the same. Then I opened the slide in Apple Keynote and exported as a high quality TIFF – much the same result. I had hoped for a difference but it looked as pixellated as PowerPoint.

All three (2 PowerPoint and 1 Keynote) were pixellated when enlarged which means they would not look crisp when projected.

As a final test I did a screen capture of the slide in PowerPoint and this was much better.

Not sure this is a practical solution but for a short (6-10 slides) talk, it’s probably worth it if you want great looking fonts in PowerPoint or Keynote especially if you are using a non-standard font.

I have shown the exported version (top) and screen capture version (bottom) so you can see the difference. The font is Minion Pro italic.
